Intro

Breaking the Binary is an illustrated educational resource designed to demystify gender dysphoria and provide accessible, affirming information to people seeking to understand their own experiences or support those around them. The book combines research-backed information with visual storytelling to create a compassionate entry point into conversations around gender identity, medical transition, and the lived experiences of gender nonconforming individuals.

Objective

To create an approachable, visually engaging resource that breaks down complex concepts related to gender dysphoria, gender nonconformity, and transition in a way that feels validating rather than clinical. The goal was to produce something that could exist both as a standalone educational tool and as a conversation starter for people navigating questions about their own gender or learning to support others.

Challenge

The primary challenge was translating dense, medical, and often gatekeeping language into something that felt human and grounded. Gender dysphoria is frequently presented through a lens of pathology—the task was to reframe it as a real, valid experience deserving of understanding and support. Balancing educational rigor with emotional accessibility required careful research, thoughtful design choices, and a visual language that felt inclusive rather than prescriptive. Additionally, the subject matter demanded sensitivity; every design decision, from color choices to illustration style to typography hierarchy, had to reinforce the book's core message of affirmation.

Result

Breaking the Binary became a 24-page illustrated guide that covers terminology, historical context through APA timelines, current research on gender nonconformity, mental health intersections, and practical information on transitioning and gender-affirming care. The design system—anchored in a bold red, grey, and white palette with strategic use of color-blocking—creates visual momentum while maintaining readability. Illustrations and infographics ground abstract concepts in relatable moments, and the book's modular layout allows readers to navigate topics in any order. The resource has served as both a personal project and a practical tool, demonstrating how design can advocate for understanding and dignity in conversations around identity.
